Signs that you are (probably) not getting enough protein
Proteins are not only important for when you exercise a lot. Proteins are important for everyone. More and more people are aware of this. But even if you are aware of it, it is still possible that you are still getting too little protein. There are several symptoms that can indicate a lack of protein. So keep the following five points in mind!
You have skin, hair and nail problems
Protein is very important for the health of your skin, hair and nails. If you notice that you get flaky skin or suffer from red spots, this may indicate a protein deficiency. Broken nails are also a symptom of a protein deficiency. When you don’t get enough protein, your nails become less strong and therefore break down faster. But a duller hair color or hair loss can also indicate that you are not getting enough protein.
Wounds don’t heal quickly
Proteins are the building blocks of the body. When there is a shortage of proteins in the body, your skin may heal less quickly when you have a wound. This is because new tissue in wounds is less built up due to a lack of protein.
You get more cravings for sweets
A clear signal of a protein deficiency is that you are more hungry for sweet things. You feel unsatisfied and you develop an appetite for chocolate and sweets, for example. Proteins have many functions, but one of the functions is to keep blood sugar levels stable. If your blood sugar level fluctuates, you can develop cravings for sweets. A tip to get rid of this is to make sure you have a good breakfast, and to spread the amount of protein well over the rest of the day.
Your head has a blurry feeling
When your head feels ‘blurred’, it could indicate that you need to get more protein. If you want to be and stay focused, protein is essential. Protein ensures that when you eat carbohydrates, they are absorbed more evenly. This also helps with your blood sugar levels.
You have a weak feeling
Proteins are essential for building muscle mass. When you get too little protein, your body will get proteins from muscles, for example. This can cause muscle breakdown, but it can also make you feel weak, especially when you are exercising.
