IN IT FOR THE LONG RUN
Behaviour is a funny thing, but a crucial and often overlooked component in a healthy and active lifestyle. We beat ourselves up when our plans fail, but often don’t really know, or even wonder, why they fail. Our goal is to shed some light on these matters and give you some easy tips and tricks to help you change.
Consistency vs. perfection
In our previous two articles, we’ve discussed how it can be helpful to change your personal environment to suit your goals, and that creating healthy habits is hard but worth it. Also, we hope we’ve made clear that we all fail from time to time, and that’s okay.
Before we get into this month’s topic we want to add in a quick tip for all you perfectionists out there: when it comes to health and nutrition, consistency trumps perfection every time. A lot of people try to wait for the perfect moment to start something new. Well, the perfect moment doesn’t exist. And once they get started they want to have the perfect diet. The perfect diet doesn’t exist. Neither does the perfect workout routine.
Just start with something that seems good enough for you and continue that for a while. See what the results are and tweak accordingly. We would say that doing something ‘good’ or ‘reasonable’ most of the time is a lot better than doing something ‘perfect’ only sometimes.
If we look at the numbers, a staggering 95% of all people who successfully (albeit with mixed success) go through the process of losing weight, gain back the weight they’ve lost. And they often add a bit more as well.
Our million-dollar question is of course: why are only 5% of the people successful in the long run?
A lot of people often get caught up in a hype, but hypes are often only interesting for a short period of time. Let’s sketch a scenario and say you’re on a roll now. You have created a healthy environment, adopted several healthy habits, and are trying to stay as consistent as possible. But what is it exactly that you need so that you can stay consistent? We can tell you now that it won’t be meal replacement shakes, or fancy workout schemes, or other hyped products. If a hype blows over then so does your system.
What we want to create for ourselves is a support system to keep us motivated when we are going strong, and to help get us back on track when we are heading in the wrong direction.
An effective support system is often multi-layered. The first layer is your direct environment (your home, having enough healthy foods in your fridge, etc.). We’ve talked about this so we won’t go into it too much. The second layer is your extended environment. Have you identified the stores that sell the right products for you? Have you sought out the closest, best or coolest gym in your neighbourhood? This can also be an engaging running class, boot camp or any other form of physical activity that you enjoy. Find the hotspots within your vicinity that will cater to your needs.
The third layer might be the most important: the people around you. We, humans, are social beings. We thrive in groups and communities. Most weight loss journeys are doomed without support from the people we hold dear, value and interact often with. Social support is one of the things that keeps us going even when the chips are down. Or in your mouth. Okay, I’m joking, chips are awesome. But we all have periods when our nutrition is not really on point. Where we slack off and just eat anything in sight. Will the people around you support you getting back on track, or will they pull you farther off track?
Sharing is caring
So the question might be… who do you turn to for support?
This can be anyone, what you need to do is find people who support you and also hold you accountable when you’re slacking off. It can be a friend, a sports buddy, someone from the gym, people in an online forum, a personal trainer or your greengrocer. And, of course, it’s even better when you have several people supporting you and holding you accountable. The more help you get, the easier it will be to stick to it. Just realise that the people you surround yourself with can either make or break your journey to a healthier body and a great physique.
